The fact that La Dolfina beat Alegria in today’s Tortugas Open play won’t come as a surprise to the polo community. The fashion in which they did it will.

In last year’s Hurlingham Open play Alegria lost to La Dolfina in a hotly-contested 13-12 game, and were hoping to build on that, but their performance today had to be a disappointment to the team members.

Following a 3-2 opening chukker, La Dolfina scored four unanswered goals in the second for a 7-2 edge. Two more goals in the third and four in the fourth were answered by a single Alegria goal as La Dolfina stretched its lead to a commanding ten goals, 13-3.
Alegria stormed onto the field in the fifth, executing shutout defense, but their attack wasn’t up to the challenge. While silencing the high-scoring La Dolfina lineup Alegria was held to two goals. La Dolfina continued to lead, 13-5.
La Dolfina continued to control the match, adding three more goals in the sixth while holding the Alegria attack to a single goal, 16-6.
With the match well in hand, La Dolfina and Alegria traded goals in the seventh and final chukker, giving La Dolfina the one-sided 18-8 win and a berth in the final of the Tortugas Open.
Adolfo Cambiaso led the La Dolfina offense with eight goals (six on penalty conversions). Pablo MacDonough added six goals and Juan Martin Nero scored four times for the win. Magoo Laprida scored three times for Alegria. Lucas Monteverde and Hilario Ulloa each scored twice (both of Ulloa’s goals came on penalty shots) and Fred Mannix scored once.

Ellerstina pounded La Aguada 17-10 to earn a slot in the Tortugas Open final against the 40-goal La Dolfina Polo Team on Saturday, October 17th.
To no one’s surprise Ellerstina beat La Aguada Sunday afternoon at the Tortugas Country Club, earning the right to play La Dolfina for the title.
The new all-Pieres lineup rang up four first chukker goals while holding the La Aguada foursome to a single score, 4-1.
The two teams traded goals in the second period, each scoring twice. Ellerstina maintained their three goal lead, 6-3.Four more goals in the third period had La Aguada struggling to keep pace with the black-shirted Ellerstina squad. La Aguada managed a pair of goals themselves but found themselves trailing by five goals at the end of the third chukker, 10-5.
The pace slowed down a bit in the next three periods either because Ellerstina decided to save their horses for the final or because the quality of their horses allowed them to do so. Single goals were scored by each team through the fourth fifth and sixth chukkers. Ellerstina rode into the final period with a 13-8 advantage.
Ellerstina finished the game with a flourish, scoring four consecutive goals tor an intimidating 17-8 advantage. Agustin Merlos managed the final two goals of the game, a game that belonged to Ellerstina from the opening chukker, 17-10.
Facundo Pieres led the Ellerstina team with nine goals (eight on penalty conversions). Polito Pieres added five goals and Gonzalito Pieres scored five times for the win. Agustin Merlos scored five of his team-high seven goals on penalty shots. Sapo Caset added two goals (one on a penalty shot) and Guillermo Terrera scored a goal.

In October 17th La Dolfina-Sancor Seguros will face Ellerstina-Piaget looking for the 1st step in the Argentine Triple Crown.
