Saturday’s performance by Adolfo Cambiaso in the final of the Tortugas Open, the first leg of Argentina’s Triple Crown of Polo should put to rest any rumors about this being his last year of high-goal polo before retiring to his home in Cañuelas.
The fact that La Dolfina beat Alegria in today’s Tortugas Open play won’t come as a surprise to the polo community. The fashion in which they did it will.
La Aguada-Las Monjitas played the 39-goal Ellerstina polo team evenly for the first two chukkers of Sunday afternoon’s Tortugas Open match, but an 11-1 run by the black-shirted Pieres clan in the third and fourth chukkers posted them to ten goal lead that La Aguada/Las Monjitas could never recover.
Alegria bounced back from their loss to Ellerstina in the Jockey Club final by racing past Chapaleufú 15-11 in the opening match of the 2015 Tortugas Open at the Tortugas Country Club in Argentina.
Argentina Triple Crown will begin in Tortugas Country Club on September 29th, when the Tortugas Open starts the match in the 1st step of the great achievement that promises a superlative level of players and horses until the final on October 17th.
The win is the second in a row for La Dolfina over an Ellerstina team that had won the previous six tournaments until last year’s loss. This year’s showdown, however, looked nothing like the closely contested 16-14 La Dolfina win that was tied at 14-14 in the final chukker.
