JOHOR ELLERSTINA INTO PALERMO OPEN FINAL

Ellerstina got on the scoreboard first with Polito Pieres driving the ball through the uprights at 1:15 for the opening 1-0 lead, but Alegría was ready to respond. Goals from Sapo Caset and Hilario Ulloa ended the first chukker of the semifinal of the 2016 Argentine Open at Palermo with Alegria on top of a 2-1 score.

Lucas Monteverde’s first goal of the game stretched the Alegria lead to two goals, 3-1, when Ellerstina charged back into the game. Consecutive goals from Polito Pieres tied the game at 3-3, with Gonzalito scoring at the 7:14 mark to give Ellerstina the 4-3 led at the end of the second period.

Ulloa tied the game at 1:06 of the third period, carrying it through the goalposts on the nearside, 4-4. Runs up and down the field produced little until Polito Pieres struck for Ellerstina at 5:24 to take back the lead, 5-4. Ulloa leveled the score once again, 5-5, with his third goal of the game at 6:21 to end the scoring in the period.

The quick pace of the game continued into the fourth chukker. Alegria team captain Fred Mannix scooped up the ball near midfield and raced down the field to score a go-ahead goal, 6-5, at 2:01. After near-goals by both sides, an Alegria foul sent Facundo Pieres to the penalty line where he converted from 30-yards out, deadlocking the game at 6-6, with the final goal of the first half.

Alegria opened the fifth period with a 30-yard penalty goal converted by Ulloa for a 7-6 Alegria lead. Polito Pieres tied the game at 1:23 with his fifth goal of the game, 7-7. An energized Alegria continued to press the attack with Ulloa scoring on a short penalty shot at the 2:23 mark and closing out the chukker with a goal from the field at 4:47 for Alegria’s first two-goal lead, 9-7, since the second period.

The game got more physical in the sixth. An early foul saw Facundo Pieres convert a 60-yard penalty shot for a goal that cut the Alegria lead back to a single goal, 9-8 at the 1:43 mark. Facundo Pieres added another goal from the field on a well-executed pass from Gonzalito, tying the game at 9-9. Facundo Pieres converted a 60-yard Safety for the final goal of the chukker, giving Ellerstina a 10-9 edge with two periods left to play.

Ellerstina started to click in the seventh, and Facundo Pieres was on fire. Facundo Pieres scored the first goal of the seventh period with just 38 seconds gone in the chukker. His second goal came two minutes later on an extreme angle shot to make it 12-9. Polito Pieres scored the final goal of the chukker, pushing through a shot from Facundo for a four goal, 13-9 advantage with one period left in regulation play.

Caset replaced Ulloa at the penalty line in the eighth, converting from 30-yards out and cutting the Ellerstina lead to three goals, 13-10. Polito Pieres scored on a pass from Facundo Pieres to make it 14-10. Alegria scrambled to get back into the game, but time wasn’t on their side. Ulloa Scored a goal from the field with just two-and-a-half minutes left in the game, 14-11, but the day belonged to Ellerstina. Polito Pieres scored on a picture-perfect pass from Gonzalito Pieres at the 5:50 mark for the final goal of the game in the 15-11 Ellerstina victory.

Polito Pieres led the Ellerstina attack with eight goals. Facundo Pieres scored six times (three on penalty shots) and Gonzalito Pieres added a goal for the win. Ulloa set the pace for the Alegria attack with seven goals (two on penalty conversions). Caset scored twice (once on a penalty shot) with Monteverde and Mannix each adding a goal in the loss.

Progression: 1-2, 4-3, 5-5, 6-6, 7-9, 10-9, 13-9 y 15-11.

Top Scorer: Polito Pieres, 8 goals.

BPP: Open Zeta Jones, played by Gonzalo Pieres.

The victory sends Ellerstina into Saturday’s final against La Dolfina in what they hope will be a repeat of the Hurlingham Open final, a game in which Ellerstina won. La Dolfina will be
looking to successfully defend their 2015 title.
